When Rolls-Royce unveiled the Silver Shadow at the London Motor Show in October 1965, it marked the brand’s entry into the modern era. With its clean, understated “pontoon” styling, the car was a sharp departure from the stately curves of the Silver Cloud. Under the bonnet, a 6.3-litre V8 produced around 220 bhp, giving the Shadow a top speed close to 120 mph. Yet inside, the qualities most associated with Rolls-Royce, remained unchanged.
The Silver Shadow went on to break all company sales records, 717 first-series examples produced between 1965 and 1971. In 1967, Mulliner introduced the convertible version, of which only 505 were built—making it the most elegant and purest form of the model.
The example offered here was delivered new to a doctor in Lakefield, Minnesota. He used it sparingly but cared for it meticulously, keeping it in a heated garage through the winter. After his passing, the car was purchased by his neighbours, who also maintained it carefully and drove it only occasionally. The car was later imported to Belgium, where it was entrusted to the former Rolls-Royce importer’s workshop foreman for a full service, including fluid changes.
In 2022, the car was imported to Sweden by its current owner. Since then, it has been meticulously refined, with accompanying invoices totalling SEK 380, 000 for the work carried out. A full list of the work performed is available upon request.
Today, this rare first-series Silver Shadow Convertible shows less than 42, 000 miles from new and comes in impressive condition after substantial spending to get the car into the great shape it is in today. Finished in a striking combination of tobacco brown paintwork with a parchment interior, and dashboard are all in excellent order, a testament to its careful ownership.
This is one of the last Silver Shadow Convertibles built, well maintained and more elegant in design than the later Corniche models, which featured heavier moulded bumpers.
